According to family information, this U.S. Map quilt was graphed out by Uriah Carpenter as a geography teaching tool for grandson William Cullen Carpenter. It is one of only a few quilts that Harriet Carpenter made that did not include her name and a presentation statement. The map is very accurate, though a few noteworthy details stand out: the eastern half of the state of Oklahoma is identified as “Indian Terr(itory)”, the Baja Peninisula is denoted as “Lower California” and Canada is listed by its formal name “Dominion of Canada.”  Note also the unique way Harriet quilted ocean waves surrounding the continent.
