Cut-out chintz quilts were the show quilts of the 1840s, in part due to the extraordinary chintz fabrics that were used to create them. This quilt incorporates numerous floral chintz-fabric motifs as well as an unusual center panel. The center block depicts Queen Victoria, wearing a rich red gown, as she stands on a balcony surrounded by oversized flowers. An overflowing urn engraved with the initials "V. R." (Victoria Regina) is placed to her left and a pedestal supporting a reclining lion to the right.
