Penny McMorris and Michael Kile's exhibition and companion book, "The Art Quilt," were pivotal in documenting and promoting the so-called "Studio Quilt" or "Art Quilt" movement, which appeared in the 1960s and '70s and had come of age by the 1980s. The artists McMorris and Kile chose to include in their exhibition were--and continued to be--among the forerunners and innovators of the movement.
