Commentary by Ardis James: "Appliqued cottons, red/green/brown on white.  Nine 20" blocks set 3x3, each containing one 27" eagle in full flight with stubby legs sticking out between wings and tail.  Wonderful border of 9" eagles also in flight, 7 across and 7 down.  This is whimsy of high order.  An outstanding Eagle quilt, this one is especially remarkable for its border of smaller eagles.  The eagle is the symbol of the American nation; this exceptionally fine example of its type may have been made in celebration of the American Centennial in 1876"
