About this very early acquisition, Ardis James wrote: "Visually, this Barn Raising does just about everything one wants from a Log Cabin quilt: its graphic presentation is strong and straightforward, its colors well selected and placed.  Precise execution creates a spirit that is bold and graphic.  This pattern was named for the resemblance of its light and dark areas to the rafters of the barn roof and sunlight coming between the beams."
