Although the International Quilt Museum acquired the Jonathan Holstein and Gail van der Hoof Collection—which includes 58 of the 61 original Whitney quilts—in 2003, the museum only acquired the iconic Circles and Crosses quilt (far right) in 2019. It was a donation from Jonathan Holstein's brother, Philip, who had lent it to Holstein and van der Hoof for the 1971 Whitney exhibition.
