Michael James, a formally trained painter, did not get a chance to see Abstract Design in American Quilts in New York, but he did receive Jonathan Holstein's 1973 book, The Pieced Quilt, as a gift that same year and was both inspired and influenced by the book's quilts, many of which had been in the 1971 Whitney exhibition.
