“Old Tyme” quilting demonstrations at fairs and festivals began at least by the American Civil War. These women carried on the tradition at the Nebraska State Fair in the early 1970s. As art museums more frequently exhibited quilts in the 1970s and beyond, groups of quiltmakers readily accepted opportunities to demonstrate their traditional knowledge before the gaze of new audiences.
