The Freedom Quilting Bee cooperative emerged from the Civil Rights Movement in Wilcox County, Alabama in 1966. The members’ quilts were often traditional folk patterns, with variations dictated mostly by the materials at hand. Quilts made by memebers of the Freedom Quilting Bee became highy collectible in the late 1960s and into the '70s.
