Textile crafts have traditionally been seen as a gendered form of folk art, firmly embedded in women's work. In the U.S., women were first invited to submit domestic products, including textiles, at agricultural fairs in the early 1880s. By the time this mid-twentieth century photo was taken, quilts and other forms of sewing were a popular, competetive, and large part of county and state fairs. Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information Black and White Negatives, photo by Russell Lee
