Barnett Newman is seen as one of the foremost Color Field and Minimalist painters of the mid-twentieth century. By titling this image "Newman's Revenge," the photographer references a 1990 controversy that erupted when Canada's National Art Gallery purchased Newman's Voice of Fire for what some felt was an outrageous amount ($1.76 million). The titular "revenge" came in the form of the painting being valued at over $40 million a quarter century later, in 2014.
