Quilt historian Bets Ramsey made this quilt in 1994 to commemorate her friendship with two Japanese women who joined her Chattanooga, Tennessee quilt guild in the 1980s. The women were in Tennessee because their husbands had been sent there by their Japanese company, and eventually they had to leave the area to be stationed elsewhere in the U.S. When they departed, they gave Bets a bundle of scraps and several pieces of antique cloth, some of which was from an old, mended kimono.
