Quilts influenced the fashion design industry and do-it-yourself (DIY) clothing makers in the 1960s and 1970s. Elements of quilt design, such as the chevron patchwork construction of this dress, appeared in couture and ready-to-wear lines. Beginning in the 1970s, fashion houses periodically have “discovered” quilts as a fresh design element. Ralph Lauren was (in)famous for cutting apart quilts and quilt tops and transforming them into clothing and fashion accessories. To create a quilty garment, an unidentified DIY maker pieced a large Log Cabin block, embroidered the seams in Crazy quilt-fashion, and appliquéd it to a ready-made skirt.
