This Native American-inspired tipi was built in the early 1970s by T.B. Firm, a Vietnam veteran who identified with the hippie/counterculture movement. Hippies generally placed a strong emphasis on DIY (do it yourself) activities and living close to the land. They often looked for guidance from books and manuals like the Whole Earth Catalog, which had directions for building a simple tipi-like structure and many other basic forms of shelter.
