The Stonewall (Inn) Riots erupted in New York City on June 28, 1969, helping to ignite the Gay Rights Movement. Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community had for decades experienced the discrimination of police officers and decided to fight back. One year later the first Gay Pride Parade was held in New York City. The Stonewall Inn is now a nationally recognized historical landmark and Pride is celebrated annually.
