August 26, 1970 was the 50th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. On that day, women across the country organized marches in support of the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment). The march pictured here, the Women's Strike for Equality, took place in Washington D.C., and went from Farragut Square to Lafayette Park. The ERA, which was approved by Congress in 1972, has never achieved ratification by three-fourths of the states, which is required for it to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
