At some point in the quilt's history, someone pencilled what appears to be the initials "B.D." on the front of the quilt (top). When it came to quilting, the maker carefully chose a darker thread for the areas with darker fabrics and a lighter thread for the lighter areas, a choice that can be seen clearly from the back of the quilt (bottom).
