Because they are so narrow, the stripes on this quilt's blocks are often called "strings." The strings may come from scraps from another sewing project or be purposely selected. There are enough repeating fabrics in this quilt that it's likely they were either picked specially or the quiltmaker had a "stash" of large leftover pieces of cloth.
