After World War II, some Dutch women celebrated liberation from Nazi control by sewing elaborate Crazy-style patchwork skirts. The inspiration for the skirts came from a woman who had been imprisoned during Nazi occupation who had received from her family a head scarf made from many fabric scraps. This treasured object, which reminded her that she was not forgotten, motivated her to urge Dutch women to "make up skirts as a project to help boost their self esteem."
