These two figures resemble geishas, Japanese female entertainers who wore traditional kimonos and often carried elegant silk fans. The fabric that hangs down each figure’s back is similar to the geisha’s obi sash. Some aspects differ from geisha attire, however, including tighter-fitting sleeves and hairstyles not quite as full and rounded. Although Japanese-inspired imagery abounded in this era, it is not known if this is a stylized, inaccurate portrayal of a geisha or if it was intended to depict another character altogether. The pattern for these similar figures has yet to be identified.
