This nineteenth-century Log Cabin piece was probably a table cover, given its almost square shape. The fabric strips of dress silks and satins have been stitched to small squares of cotton foundation fabric, with the tacking stitches visible from the rear. The design is made up of 36 complete squares set on point plus 24 triangles completing the shape. The edge of the coverlet has been bound with black satin and the outer strips of the units in dark fabrics have been edged in black and dark blue velvet, contrasting well with the lighter shaded units, making an overall pleasing design.
