The Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, “The Mikado,” debuted in March 1885 at London’s Savoy Theatre and was such an immediate hit that upwards of 150 different American and European companies were performing it by the end of the year. Its popularity was a direct result of increasing trade with Japan and, more consequentially, exposure to its arts and culture.
