The central panel of Crazy patchwork in this coverlet is beautifully set off by the bright blue panne dress velvet borders. A bobble edging in pale blue, but now faded, has been added. Herringbone stitch executed in a yellow cotton thread covers the joins of the patchwork. In addition, most patches contain well executed embroidered floral motifs, together with some birds, including a couple of swans and some kingfishers. The embroidery also includes butterflies and other insects.

The bright colors in this piece, especially the borders, are typical of the vibrant hues seen in the late nineteenth century, after the development of strong colorfast aniline dyes.
