Although “all over” Crazy quilts—ones without easily discernible construction units—were made in the U.S., block-style Crazy quilts were more common. This quilt’s nine blocks all feature Crazy patchwork—with two exceptions: the middle block displays embroidered ribbon roses, chenille foliage, and an elaborate monogram, while the bottom left block is filled with an eagle bearing the American flag and a banner with the country’s motto, E Pluribus Unum (“Out of many, one”). “14th A.C.,” which may refer to a military company, is also embroidered on the block.
