This block style Crazy quilt has floral motifs in most of the blocks and also some scenes in outline embroidery, one of children playing, another of Asian figures. It has a velvet border worked in chenille embroidery, where the pattern marking is visible in places. The quilt also includes an outline portrait of Oscar Wilde, Anglo-Irish playwright. He helped popularise the late-nineteenth-century Aesthetic Movement, concerned with the (intentional) artistic beautification of every surface and space of one’s home, on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1882, Wilde took America by storm in a country-wide lecture tour, which was warmly received by some and ridiculed and scorned by others.
