Spode Pottery of Staffordshire, England perfected the process of transfer printing in an underglaze blue—a style with which the company became firmly associated. This early nineteenth-century example is done in the Cracked Ice and Prunus pattern. Spode designs often were taken from original Chinese porcelain. Interestingly, the alternative name for the pattern was Mosaic and Marble, Mosaic being an alternative name for Crazy patchwork.
