Although she was formally trained as a printmaker, Terrie Hancock Mangat switched to quiltmaking in the 1970s and became known as a pioneer of surface embellishment in quilt art. Her mixed media approach resulted in encrusted surfaces that in many ways resembled the Crazy quilt aesthetic of more than a century prior.
This piece hides a secret that is only revealed in the dark: it is decorated with glow-in-the-dark paint that, when viewed after the lights go out, creates after effects similar to fading fireworks in the sky.
