A non-religious patchwork garment, the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 CE) shuitian yi, or “paddy field garment,” has been documented in paintings, although no garments are known to have survived to the present day.  The shuitian yi was a woman’s patchwork gown that reflected the Ming dynasty's tendency towards novelty in fashion; its irregularly pieced fabrics (similar to Crazy quilts) distinguish it from other costume of its day.
