String quilts are related to Crazy quilts in technique and aesthetics. Just like Crazy quilts, they are constructed on a foundation fabric. Uneven, narrow scraps of fabric, "strings," are sewn down to the foundation block, one after the other. Completed blocks are then joined together, resulting in an overall chaotic look, which in this case is enhanced by the frequent red yarn "ties" holding the quilt layers together.
