Domed mosques and other religious buildings are an ever-present component of the built landscape in Central Asia. Islam arrived in Central Asia in the 8th century and quickly became the main religion of the region, although pre-Islamic beliefs did not completely disappear, including Zoroastrianism and various forms of shamanism.
