Central Asia is well-known for its ikat fabrics, an example of which is prominently displayed on the outside of this robe. On the robe's interior is a printed cotton, likely produced in Russia for the Central Asian market and featuring the red and black color combination typical of these fabrics. What is remarkable about it, however, is that it is an imitation of patchwork, what today's Western quiltmakers might call "cheater cloth."
