Appliqué is less common than patchwork in Central Asia. In this Uzbek example, designs were cut out of black and grey fabrics and both the positive and negative shapes were appliquéd onto white, red, and yellow backgrounds. Each appliqué block alternates with a printed or woven fabric typical of the region.
