Walk into a quilt shop in any of the larger Amish settlements across North America, and you’ll discover an array of quilts stacked on beds, displayed on rods, hanging on walls, and folded on shelves. The Amish quilt industry of the last 40 years has produced quilts in every style, including: ones that resemble the “old dark quilts” of 100 years ago, adapted for king size beds with decorative borders scaled to fold over pillows; small “wall-hangers”; cheery country appliqués that follow interior decorating trends; and intricately stitched white-on-white quilts—today’s version of a best quilt. One can spend hours sorting through the inventory in such a shop, never seeing the same design twice.
