Quilt shops in Amish settlements have become a successful alternative to farming. Retail enterprises typically employ multiple family members, just as in traditional farming, with a similar degree of flexibility built into the day and seasonal ebbs and flows. Although Amish society has been patriarchal, the growth of women entrepreneurs has altered this dynamic, with men sometimes working for their wives’ quilt businesses, as is the case at Smucker’s Quilts in New Holland, Pennsylvania.
