This quilt, now part of the collection of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, once was part of Esprit’s collection. Its graphic checkerboard pattern, with saturated solid-colored fabrics, shares much with Esprit’s 1980s color-block aesthetic. Anecdotally we know that Tompkins sent his designers to the quilts for inspiration. The next image reveals what likely is one result of this assignment.
