Strip-piecing of materials to make popular patterns such as Lone Star and Irish Chain is now a standard method.  In the early 1970s, however, it was a new invention.  Ernest Haight receives credit for “inventing” this method as he was the first to publish it in 1974.  Approaching quiltmaking from an engineer’s perspective, efficiency and accuracy were important parts of his design process, so he regularly sought ways to perfect his methods. Instructional books were important to teaching quiltmaking and spreading new construction methods during a time when quilters were not learning from their mothers and grandmothers.
