In the early 20th century, quilt cottage industries were centered in Appalachia, existing as part of a larger craft revival interested in handmade objects and the value of work within society. This 1934 photo was likely posed, but pictures women who benefitted economically from consumer demand for quilts fueled by the Colonial Revival.
