Making quilts was one of the many textile-related tasks 19th-century women took on. This quiltmaker reused a cotton bed sheet, embroidered with the family’s initials. Such domestic textiles were typical of the sort women were responsible for at this time, particularly prior to industrialization and the availability of inexpensive cloth. A sheet may have been made at home, with parts of the labor intensive spinning and weaving processes performed as part of ongoing women’s work.
