This quilted fragment features the copperplate-printed fabric, L'hommage de l'Amerique a la France, or “Homage to France from America.” Printed in 1783 at the famous Oberkampf factory in Jouy-en-Josas, France,  this plate print, or “toile de Jouy,” pays tribute to France’s support of the colonists during the American Revolution. Because roller prints, which largely replaced plate prints by the turn of the 19th century, are limited to small-scale, repeating designs, copper plate printing remained in use for many years specifically for household furnishing fabrics. This style of print remains known as “toile de Jouy,” or cloth of Jouy.
