“Remember the Slave,” pleads the inscription on this block, part of a quilt presented to Quaker Sarah Wistar in 1842. The image, of a chained slave, was an icon of the anti-slavery movement, first in the U.K., then in the United States. It appeared on a variety of objects, including domestic items such as sugar bowls, purses and pin cushions.
