Although we do not know if this quilt was made for a special purpose or occasion, we do know that all of the individuals represented by their signatures were residents of the Lafayette Square neighborhood of south St. Louis, MO. By investigating the dates of certain events in the lives of these women, we have narrowed the estimated date for the quilt’s construction. The women could not have made the quilt prior to 1929, the year of Mrs. Minnie Pollman’s marriage to her husband Louis, since her married name appears on the quilt. Likewise, the quilt could not date later than January 1932, when Mrs. Senie Guenther died.
