Stylized images of exotic flora and fauna were featured in chintz fabrics. In the U.S. the floral images were cut apart and stitched to neutral backgrounds, a process called chintz appliqué (also known as broderie perse).  The overall designs of early English and American quilts retain a close tie to the aesthetic look of earlier Indian textiles, with a center medallion focus, and matching corner elements.
