In a 1978 study of quiltmaking in the Blue Ridge Mountains area of North Carolina and Virginia, Gerri Johnson documented quiltmakers including Carrie Severt, whose strip quilts like the one here appear to exhibit many of the characteristics some scholars have used to identify African American makers.
