The Smithsonian Institution held its first annual Festival of American Folklife (now called Smithsonian Folklife Festival) in 1967 on the National Mall. In 1968, an exhibit featured participants gathered around a quilting frame placing stitches into this Broken Dishes quilt. Such public demonstrations of quilting helped spur a renewed interest in the craft as the Bicentennial approached. Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections
