Quilting stitches can serve two functions. These stitches hold together the layers, but can also be an integral part of the design, either complementing other surface elements or creating the surface design itself. Machine quilting has become a standard choice for a large number of quiltmakers. Quilters who prefer the design process can create more quilts faster using their machines for utilitarian quilting. Artists have adapted machine quilting for their purposes as well. In this piece made for Meet SAQA’s Artists: SAQA’s 20th Anniversary Trunk Show, Nancy Cook used machine-quilting to create low-relief sculpture.
