Jean Ray Laury began making quilts in the late 1950s, often calling into question the definition of art as it was perceived by both the art world and the average viewer.  In These Is Not Art, #1 Laury took a somewhat humorous view of the comments written in a guestbook at a contemporary art show.  The viewer had stated that real art had a Madonna in it, not “all these squares and things.” In her quilt, already sitting precariously on that fence between art and craft, Laury stamped a Madonna image among her squares and things.
