Jean Ray Laury, as an early advocate of using an artistic sensibility in quiltmaking, experimented with many techniques unheard of in quiltmaking during the 1960s and 1970s. In Cherries Quilt, Laury used a fabric stamping method rather than the more traditional, and time-consuming, appliqué method. Her quilts showed what was possible when quiltmakers tried to combine the traditional practices with contemporary ones.
