Sometime before 1938, Emma Pytlik of Howells, Nebraska, made The White Spot of the Nation. During the 1930s, Nebraska was known as the White Spot in the Nation because it had no state sales or state income tax and maintained a balanced budget. While we do not know specifically why Pytlik made this quilt, the correlation of the time period for making the quilt and the nickname for Nebraska provide evidence that she may have made this quilt to show her support for the Nebraska governor and his political policies.
