Hortense Beck of Kansas came to quilting late in life. She had always considered herself a failed craftswoman having tried a variety of crafts. When she began making quilts, she found her niche. Lady Liberty is a tribute to her skills as an appliquer and as an original designer. She drafted her design for the Statue of Liberty from a souvenir box, and the motifs in the corners commemorate her husband’s family’s migration to the United States. This quilt and her reproductions were hand-drafted from pictures. She rarely used pre-printed patterns.
