Hexagon mosaic patchwork is often considered the quintessential British quilt style. The oldest dated mosaic patchwork piece in the IQSCM collections, this quilt was made by Anna Ruggles (1776-1842) of Gloucester, England in 1796. By careful fussy cutting (selective cutting of a printed fabric design), Anna was able to create interesting kaleidoscopic effects in the single hexagon rosettes, although she wasted a great deal of fabric in the process. Because she was able to selectively use portions of her fabric and had the leisure time to complete a highly complex patchwork project, Anna was likely of a higher economic class.
